A tree surgeon working with the National Eviction Team removes branches from an ancient alder tree prior to its felling in connection with works for the HS2 high-speed rail link in Denham Country Park. A large policing operation involving the Metropolitan Police, Thames Valley Police, City of London Police and Hampshire Police as well as the National Eviction Team was put in place to enable HS2 to remove the tree. 2020 is the Year of the Tree.

Felling of the woodland which contains resting places and/or breeding sites for pipistrelle, barbastelle, noctule, brown long-eared and natterer’s bats has recommenced after a High Court judge yesterday refused campaigner Mark Keir permission to apply for judicial review and lifted an injunction on felling.

Extinction Rebellion, Stop HS2 and Save the Colne Valley had reoccupied the camp two days before as part of an ongoing attempt to protect ancient woodland threatened by the HS2 high-speed rail link after a small group of Stop HS2 activists had been evicted by bailiffs over the course of the previous two weeks. 108 ancient woodlands are set to be destroyed by the high-speed rail link.
