An area cleared for works for the HS2 high-speed rail link leading down to an ancient alder tree with a girth of 11.6 metres and the river Colne. Planned works in the immediate area are believed to include the felling of 200 trees and the construction of a roadway, Bailey bridge, compounds, fencing and a parking area. The other side of the river bank lies within a wetland nature reserve adjacent to a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation (SMI).
