London, UK. 28th November, 2024. Hundreds of members of the Kurdish community and supporters march from a rally in Turnpike Lane to the Kurdish Community Centre (KCC).
The Metropolitan Police had raided the KCC a day before, arresting seven people for alleged involvement with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an organisation proscribed in the UK in 2001.
This forms part of a growing pattern of UK state repression of the Kurdish community in the UK, which is largely comprised of asylum seekers fleeing Turkish oppression.
The KCC is home to the Kurdish People’s Assembly in the UK and a vital refugee charity amenity and some reports suggest that the police intend to maintain control of it for two weeks.
After brief initial clashes with the Metropolitan Police when the protesters were diverted from their route on Green Lanes only to find their onward route to the KCC barred by crush barriers and lines of police officers, including riot police, senior members of the community joined arms in front of the riot police whilst others took part in Kurdish singing and dancing in the street.
