London, UK. 26th October, 2024. The United Families & Friends Campaign (UFFC) hold their 25th annual procession in remembrance of family members and friends who died in police custody, in prison, in immigration detention or in secure psychiatric hospitals. UFFC was established in 1997 as a support network of black families but now includes the families and friends of people from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds. There have been 1,906 deaths in police custody or otherwise following contact with the police in England and Wales since 1990. According to data published earlier this month by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), 24 people died in or following police custody in 2023-2024, the highest number recorded for 17 years. The family of Chris Kaba was represented by his cousin Sheeda, who presented a letter to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street together with a copy of a pamphlet titled ‘The Right to Life’ written by Keir Starmer in 1998, and members of the Justice for Chris Kaba campaign.
