London, UK. 21st September, 2024. Human rights activists from groups including Apples Against Apartheid and Stand For Congo UK march through central London on the same day as Apple launched the iPhone 16 to call on the company to prioritise human rights when sourcing minerals and to end its silence with regard to Israel's war on Gaza. The protesters criticised in particular Apple's sourcing of cobalt used in iPhones from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Similar protests were held in Bristol and Reading as well as in other cities around the world.
