London, UK. 28th October, 2023. Campaigners from the United Families & Friends Campaign (UFFC) take part in their annual procession in remembrance of family members and friends who died in police custody, in prison, in immigration detention or in secure psychiatric hospitals.
UFFC was established in 1997 as a support network of black families but now includes the families and friends of people from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It demands that prison deaths be subject to independent investigation, that officers involved in custody deaths be suspended pending completion of investigations, that prosecutions should allow for unlawful killing verdicts, that legal aid and full disclosure of information be available to the relatives of victims and that officers responsible for deaths should face criminal charges even if retired.
There have been 1,876 deaths in police custody or otherwise following contact with the police in England and Wales since 1990, with deaths during the year April 2022-March 2023 the joint-highest since 2007.
