Epsom, UK. 3rd June, 2023. Animal rights campaigners from groups including Animal Rising and Animal Aid protest outside Epsom Downs racecourse on the day of the Epsom Derby. Animal Rising are using non-violent action to open a national conversation about what they term 'our broken relationship to animals and nature' and consider the horse racing industry to be cruel and exploitative. A huge additional security operation costing £150,000 - present were hundreds of security staff and police officers from multiple forces, as well as tactical firearms support and a helicopter - was put in place to prevent disruption believed to have been planned by Animal Rising. Surrey Police advised that 31 arrests had been made, including 19 made pre-emptively before the event. One Animal Rising activist breached the security in order to gain access to the racecourse as the Epsom Derby began.
