London, UK. 1st December, 2022. Activists from AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) London, a diverse and non-partisan international grassroots political group working to end the AIDS pandemic, stage a mass die-in in Trafalgar Square for World AIDS Day (WAD).
ACT UP London are calling for collective national action against government policies which are forcing the closure of HIV/AIDS education, prevention and support services.
The die-in recreated a historical die-in in Trafalgar Square by AIDS activists in 1989, when Margaret Thatcher’s government was threatening to close an AIDS ward at Middlesex Hospital. A few of the images have been converted to black and white in homage to the images of the 1989 die-in produced by Gordon Rainsford.
World AIDS Day is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.
