Windsor, UK. 15th November, 2022. PETA supporters hold a banner reading 'Bearskin Caps? That’s Old Hat! Switch to Faux Fur' during the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside Windsor Castle.
PETA continue to campaign to urge the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to replace the bearskins used to make the King’s Guard’s caps with the world’s first faux bear fur, created by PETA and luxury faux furrier ECOPEL.
PETA began legal proceedings against the MoD on the grounds of unlawful conduct following the ministry’s refusal to read a laboratory test report regarding the faux bear fur, which meets the MoD’s five fulfilment criteria for faux bear fur and even outperforms bear fur in some areas. ECOPEL has offered the MoD an unlimited amount of its faux fur free-of-charge until 2030, which would not only save many bears' lives but would also save the British taxpayer money.
PETA advises that it takes the skin of at least one bear to make a single cap. It further claims that some bears are shot several times before they die, that some escape only to bleed to death and that when mother bears are killed, their cubs are left to starve.
A government e-petition in support of PETA’s campaign for faux fur bearskins had been signed by more than 100,000 people by July 2022.
