2021-02-23 HS2 Poors Piece Conservation Project eviction

37 images Created 23 Feb 2021

Steeple Claydon, UK. 23rd February, 2021. National Eviction Team bailiffs acting for HS2 Ltd, facilitated by Thames Valley Police, begin an operation to evict activists opposed to the HS2 high-speed rail link from ancient woodland known as Poor's Piece.

Environmental activists created the Poor's Piece Conservation Project in the ancient woodland in spring 2020 after having been invited to stay on the land by its owner, farmer Clive Higgins, after it became clear that a large section of the significant ancient woodland was threatened with felling in conjunction with an infrastructure maintenance depot for the HS2 project.

Poor’s Piece has been managed woodland since the mid-16th century and is reported to be a haven for wildlife including eight protected red list bird species, at least five species of bat and red, muntjac and fallow deer.

Local village communities in the surrounding area have been hugely impacted by HS2, with 550 acres of land seized including some ancient woodland and a large section of Calvert Jubilee nature reserve.
