West Hyde, UK. 14th September, 2020. Six environmental activists from HS2 Rebellion use lock-on arm tubes within boxes to block two separate gates to the Southern Portal works site for the HS2 high-speed rail link as part of a protest against the devastating environmental impact of the rail infrastructure project in the Chilterns. Hertfordshire Police and the National Eviction Team (NET) attend, with the police force only working to remove the activists from the road. One gate remained blocked for over six hours and another for over nineteen hours. Hertfordshire Police arrested six activists on suspicion of aggravated trespass under s68 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 and at least one other activist on the periphery of the protest action. The controversial HS2 high-speed rail project is currently expected by the government to cost £106bn and will destroy or significantly impact many irreplaceable natural habitats, including 108 ancient woodlands.
