London, UK. 20 December, 2019. The historic Grade II*-listed Whitechapel Bell Foundry, founded in 1570, has produced some of the world’s most famous bells such as Big Ben and the Liberty Bell. Business pressures forced its closure in 2017, with production moved elsewhere by its owners Alan and Kathryn Hughes, and controversial plans to redevelop the site as workshops, a café and a 103-room hotel, were recently narrowly approved by Tower Hamlets Council.
