Hundreds of activists from groups including the All African Women’s Group, a self-help group of women many of whom have spent time in Yarl’s Wood detention centre, Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants, a queer activist group that stands in solidarity with other communities facing state violence and media attacks, Docs Not Cops, a campaign group of NHS professionals and patients who believe health is a right and not a privilege, and Reclaim the Power, a direct action network working in solidarity with frontline communities to fight for social, environmental and economic justice, protest outside the Home Office to demand an end to the Government’s ‘hostile environment’ policies. Just a few days after Priti Patel, who backed key elements of the 'hostile environment' policies under Prime Minister Theresa May, was appointed as Home Secretary by Boris Johnson, activist groups are serving notice on organisations involved in perpetuating the Government’s racist immigration policy in advance of escalating action planned for October 2019. The protest featured an interactive performance by the All African Women's Group, speeches by activists representing several different groups, a large model of an aircraft used for deportation flights and a picnic in front of the Home Office. Activists from Reclaim the Power are currently based at a mass occupation camp near to Drax Energy’s Rye House gas power station in Hertfordshire.
