Members of the Somali community, NUS Black Students and supporters march from the Department for Education to Parliament Square to call for a formal investigation into the death of Somali refugee girl Shukri Abdi, aged 12 from Bury, who died in the river Irwell on 27th June. Shukri Abdi's death has shocked both her local community and the UK's wider Somali community, with many Somalis contending that the circumstances of her death were suspicious and also suspecting a cover-up in relation to bullying which her family claim took place and was reported at Broad Oak Sports College (previously Broad Oak High School) during the final weeks of her life. Broad Oak committed to reviewing its anti-bullying policy after concerns were raised and Greater Manchester Police have told an inquest that they have found nothing to suggest any bullying or coercion in connection with Shukri Abdi's death. Protests calling for a formal investigation are expected to continue. Shukri Abdi arrived in the UK over two years ago with her mother and siblings as refugees from war-torn Somalia via the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya.
