London, UK. 15th April 2019. Thousands of climate campaigners of all ages from Extinction Rebellion begin the International Rebellion UK by blocking roads around well-known landmarks Oxford Circus, Marble Arch, Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Waterloo Bridge. A full-size yacht, named the Ship of Truth, was used to block Oxford Circus and then converted into a stage to provide entertainment for thousands of protesters. Waterloo Bridge was converted into a garden bridge with trees, plants, flowers, a miniature skate park and a stage and Piccadilly Circus was occupied with a sit-down protest by the youth section of Extinction Rebellion. Extinction Rebellion are calling on the British government to declare a climate emergency, to slash greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025 and to create a citizens’ assembly to debate climate issues and plan to scale up their protests if a suitable response is not received from the Government. Similar demonstrations are planned in 80 cities across 33 countries, including Accra, Melbourne and Berlin.
