London, UK. 2nd February, 2018. Faisal Abu Alhayjaa and Alaa Shehada, actors and comedians from the Jenin Freedom Theatre, give a special performance with comedian Mark Thomas of his acclaimed 'Showtime from the Frontline' at Toynbee Studios for members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). The show tells the story of how Mark Thomas and his team overcame many obstacles to set up a comedy club for two nights in the Palestinian city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank.
The Freedom Theatre is a Palestinian community theatre and cultural centre in the Jenin refugee camp. It was founded in 2006 by Palestinian-Israeli actor and theatre director Juliano Mer Khamis with the aim of generating cultural resistance to fight for Palestinian justice, equality and self-determination and has a particular focus on ensuring that theatre and visual arts are available to young Palestinians living in the refugee camp. Jenin refugee camp houses the descendants of Palestinian families displaced during the Nakba when 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes to make way for the establishment of Israel; it currently hosts around 14,000 Palestinian refugees in an area just 0.42km².
